Quailbones Featured in Maximum Rock N Roll

Kentucky garage rockers featured in top 10 lists for latest 7” Crane Wilbur

Murray, KY garage rockers Quailbones were featured in 2 top ten lists in this month’s edition of Maximum Rock N Roll for their latest vinyl release Crane Wilbur.  This is some well deserved attention for the band as they are almost solely responsible for supporting independent music in rural western Kentucky.

Quailbone’s latest 45 RPM vinyl record has been described by listeners as the love child between Black Flag’s experimental/dissonant guitar riffs, Ian Curtis’s haunting powerful vocals, and the steady driving tempo of surf drum beats.  All of these influences have been well-informed by the rawness, emotion, and slight pop flavor of garage punk.  Of course that completely overlooks the obvious indie rock overtones, but that is pretty obvious to any listener that puts this record on.  The fact that these guys grabbed the attention of the great Maximum Rock N Roll magazine is no surprise to me as MRNR has been known to have exquisite taste in punk, indie, and alternative music.

More great independent garage punk!

Quailbones guitarist Tim Peyton has perhaps been the busiest of all out of the group as he runs the only record store in a 2.5 hour radius, which also doubles as the only venue to regularly host touring acts (and pay them!).  Terrapin Station, located in the plaza behind Sirloin Stockade, is one of the few safe havens in Murray for music lovers and students alike.  Located in a college town that prides itself on their music degree program, Terrapin Station gets traffic ranging from punk rockers to eclectic classically trained musicians, searching for everything from The Misfits to The Modern Jazz Quartet (both of which I’ve personally found in the store).  This record store is the only proper venue in western Kentucky that regularly hosts touring bands and even pays them out of pocket when the audience is small.  As a focal point of the west Kentucky music scene Terrapin Station is one of the last remaining bastions of hope for independent music in the rural area.  This is one of the few places in small town America that still retains the sense of community and friendship that could once easily be found with a trip to your local music retailer.

Another manifestation of Quailbones’ efforts in the western Kentucky music scene is a house venue known only as Tater-Tot Mansion.  Quailbones’ vocalist Corbet Hall and drummer Jordan Ferguson live at the aforementioned house and regularly open their home to friends and strangers alike so that bands may perform and collect tips for their efforts.  Occasionally they even open their home up for touring bands to play, though gas money can be hard to come by at times.  However, few things are more exciting than having masked musicians’ siege your house for an evening of wild rock and roll dance frenzy, as was the case when surf rockers Daikaiju played the house late last year, supported by locals Female Orca Whale.

More great house shows!

But wait, that’s not all these entrepreneurs are doing in small town Kentucky.  Believe it or not these guys also run a record label in Murray known as “Ghost. Orchard. Records.”.  The primary purpose of the label (as with most small indie labels) is to independently release the Quailbones material, but they have also released a handful of other artists such as Secular Pets and Happy Forever, as well as releasing a compilation of local independent musicians known as “Once Upon A Time, The End”.  Does their stamina ever cease? These boys seem compelled to get themselves up and others out there, even if they have to do it all by themselves.

Maximum Rock N Roll is one of the most widely distributed and longest running not-for-profit fanzines in America.  Based in San Francisco, CA, MRR centers around independent and alternative music with a decided focus on punk rock and its’ subgenres.  It is commonly seen as a staple of the punk and DIY community for their long standing commitment to giving DIY independent efforts proper coverage when others will not.  MRR features reviews, feature columns, interviews, and other submissions from contributors both in the U.S. and internationally.  MRR also does not limit themselves only to music and has been known to feature literature, art, film, and other forms of creative media.
